Most units are designed to force air through a bed of desiccant, thus expelling dry air out the other end. The benefit to a regenerative breather is that the desiccant medium is regenerated instead of being disposed of. Most units are designed with two separate cylinders, each with their own purpose, one to dry the air, the other to regenerate the desiccant. As one bed becomes saturated and less efficient a solenoid controlled valve will switch cylinders so the saturated desiccant will begin to be regenerated as the other cylinder becomes active and dries incoming air.
