Natural foods are now in the spotlight after a new report said more than half of the world’s food is sourced from ‘natural’ sources.
The report by the food industry association, which includes companies including Nestle, Marks and Spencer, says almost 40 per cent of food grown globally is produced from natural sources.
It said the rise in the use of organic and natural foods has had a positive impact on the health of the planet, with more people eating more fruits and vegetables.
The findings have come after the International Food Information Council (IFIC) reported a record increase in demand for organic and vegan products.
More than half the world is now buying food from natural food companies, including more than 70 per cent in developing countries, according to the report.
And that’s despite a “slowly improving” environment and the rise of sustainable farming methods, it said.
The IFAIC’s chief executive, Ian Walker, said the report shows that natural food is “a critical and growing force” in the global food system.
“It’s also a vital part of our health, nutrition and wellbeing,” he said.
“Natural food is the fastest growing segment of the global economy, and it’s growing fast.”

“We need to take a bolder approach to the natural foods revolution, which will help to reverse the tide of the last 50 years of food insecurity,” Mr Walker said.
Natural food companies are taking on more and more of the market, according the report, and will continue to grow.
“This is a growing, complex and rapidly evolving industry,” Mr Wood said.
It also found organic food has become the most popular way to grow food in the world.
“We are seeing an unprecedented amount of demand for sustainable and local food production.”
More than 75 per cent [of the world] now consumes organic food.
“A lot of this growth is coming from the US, with organic food now being sold at more than 40 per day.
The study said the food sector had a global reach of more than $3.5 trillion.
In terms of sales, China, the world leader, was the top consumer of organic food in 2017.
But it also said organic food prices were on the rise, with food-grade ingredients such as sugar and spices becoming more expensive.
The world is not eating the same food as it used to, Mr Walker warned.”
