The seeds of sunflower, a native American plant that grows in all the countries in the world, have become the latest casualty of a growing global food crisis.
More than two thirds of the world’s population lives on less than $2.25 per day, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
Many nations, including the United States, are scrambling to find ways to feed themselves and reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining their food security.
The world needs more nutritious foods that are grown in less land, and we have to get used to the fact that there are a lot of things out there that we can’t grow on our own,” says Anthony Sowden, the founder of a small food-focused company called Soybean Harvest.
Sowden and his company are working with farmers to grow soybeans that will provide a balanced diet for their people, while avoiding the seeds of the most widely grown crops in the U.S.
He also believes the future of farming in the United Kingdom is bright, and that it could provide a blueprint for how to thrive in a world of climate change. “
I think there’s a lot that we all have in common that we should all do, which is grow food,” Sowen says.

In the UK, he says, we’re not only seeing a shift toward sustainability and growing food locally, but also a shift away from the industrial farming model that’s taking over.
If we want to create the kinds of jobs that our people are looking for, we need to change that system,” Sowerden says.
For Sowens family, that means the future could look like a soybean farm.
His grandfather started the family’s soybean business in the 1930s, growing soybeans on a farm in Essex, England, in the 1950s.
His son is the oldest son, and his father worked for the family until he retired in 2012.”
There was a real sense of excitement when I heard that the company that I grew up with would be buying our family farm, and I was absolutely thrilled,” says Sowensen.
Sowens grandfather died when Sowendens was young, and the family struggled financially for decades.
When Sowenderes father passed away in 2002, the family decided to put the family farm on the market.
In 2012, he bought it for $3.25 million, and is now the first generation of the family to own it.”

We all knew that the world needed a lot more food, but there was a lot we didn’t know.”
Sowen and his family also sold off their family farm to a local farmer in the early 2000s.
But when that farm closed in 2012, the Sowends decided to sell off their soybean farming business and focus their efforts on Soy Harvest.
This past year, Sowenhows family has started a business with Sowened, called Soybeans for Everyone.
Soybeans for Everybody will be a new company that will focus on growing more sustainable food.
The goal is to make a sustainable food that is more affordable, easier to grow, and easier to sell, according a statement from Soybeans For Everyone.
They also plan to make the farm into a tourist attraction and have food trucks available on the farm.
